Hello, my name is Dwight Haigh and I
currently live in Flagstaff, Arizona.
My
mother was a school teacher in Virginia when she married my father, a salesman for Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company and
our family relocated frequently with his transfers. That's probably how my
wanderlust was conditioned in me. I was born in Richmond, Virginia, moved
to Charlotte, North Carolina, where my brother Robert was born, then to St. Louis, Missouri, and then to
Toledo, Ohio, where my sister Amy was born and where I graduated
from Perrysburg High School in 1973. After a brief education at Randolph Macon
College in Ashland, Virginia, I moved to "The Fan" district of Virginia
Commonwealth University in Richmond. It was the 70's and my best friends
were musicians, artists and photographers and the seed of creativity was
planted. After a summer of work and play on the beaches of Nags Head, North Carolina
I moved to the mountains of Aspen,
Colorado. I lived in Aspen 11 years working in hotel maintenance
management and as a ranch manager for a Saudi Arabian Prince.
In Aspen, I met my wife Anne, who was even
more of a gypsy (and still is) than I was. We lived on an estancia in
Patagonia, Argentina for a year and once our son
Steven was born in Aspen, we moved to Maui, Hawaii and the following year
to Sedona, Arizona. We lived in Sedona six years, in Tucson five years and
then in Page, on beautiful Lake Powell for nine years. Now we're in
Flagstaff.
During the 80's, I was a woodworker and
designed and built southwest furniture and home furnishings which were
sold in galleries and retail stores across the country. I also strapped a
camera on my shoulder everywhere I went.
I studied art and photography at Colorado Mountain
College and later through The New York Institute of Photography. Soon, I
was moonlighting as a wedding photographer on weekends and later worked as
a newspaper photographer and a freelance editorial and textbook
photographer. For over 15 years, my daily life was the business of studio
portrait photography.
While working as a photographer by day, my
after-hours passion was painting. My creative style grew from the designs,
symbols and colors of the southwest which are now ever-present in my
artwork. A more recent "tribal" influence on my artwork resulted from a trip to Brazil
and a second trip to Columbia where I
spent time with a Columbian Shaman.
Funny how life is. I thought I would work
as a photographer until my dieing day, but as of this update, it has been
nearly 3 years since my last professional assignment. If you had asked me
5 years ago if I would enjoy being a Kitchen Designer, I would have looked
in left field and wondered where that question came from. But, that's what
my current work is and I'm having fun.
For those of you who have visited my site
before, you will notice some changes. I am no longer promoting my
photography services. I almost removed my website altogether, but then
thought why not just put up three big galleries of my favorite images
through the years. Yes, why not?
Thank you for visiting.
